How long do you have to store your firewood?To provide a maximum of calories, the firewood shall not include more than 20 % humidity.
Yet, 2 years are needed for freshly logged wood to reach this rate. The drying time depends on the logs’ size and if they are split or not.
33 cm long chunks of wood, stored under shelter, shall be kept during 15 months if cut in quarters, and 17 months if cut in logs.
However, a cubic meter of wood which had be stored openly (1 m long chunks of wood), can require up to 2 years to dry if cut in quarters and even more if cut in logs. That is why it is important to shelter the wood, to saw it and to split it before storing it, as the drying time can vary by a factor of two.
